This sensuously written book is actually a memoir with recipes, for Reichl discovered early on that "food could be a way of making sense of the world
. . . If you watched people as they ate, you could find out who they were." Begun humorously with tales about her mother, an unstable woman who loved to entertain but was notorious for offering her guests dishes tainted with food poisoning, one can't help but wonder how Reichl develops her love and reverence for fine food. But she tells all in this highly entertaining remembrance of her childhood to early adult years, which is spiced with her instructions for creating those dishes she so sumptuously describes as being an important part of her growing up memories.
